Peggy Benson has served as the Executive Officer for the Alabama Board of Nursing (ABN) since 2014 and as the Alabama Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) Commissioner since 2020. She has been a nurse for nearly 45 years, working in executive nursing, human resources, and healthcare leadership roles throughout her career. In addition to being a board-certified nurse executive, her varied work experience includes  service as the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), System Director of Critical Care and Medical Surgical Nursing, over a five-hospital system, Director of Nursing and Vice President of Human Resources, Educator, ABN Legal Nurse Consultant, and as the first Deputy Director for the ABN. Peggy continues to lead at the state and national level through her work on numerous entities, including:

  • Current member of the Governor’s Healthcare Workforce Taskforce
  • Current member of the Policy and Procedures Committee of the National Licensure Commission (NLC)
  • Current member of the Finance Committee of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN)
  • Current member of the National Governors Association Healthcare Workforce
  • Former member the Standards of Practice Committee of the NCSBN
  • Former member Nursing Model Rules and Model Act Committee of the NCSBN
  • Former member Governor’s Task Force on Healthcare Improvement and Chair of the Infrastructure Committee
  • Former board member and President of the ABN
  • Former board member and President of the Alabama Organization of Nurse Executives
  • Former board member and Secretary for the Central District Alabama Organization of Nurse Executives
